Changes To The 30-55 Law - The Real Story
On July 1, 2002, a law was enacted that allowed members turning 55 years of age AND having 30 years of service credit with the POAB Fund to receive benefits without retiring from law enforcement. Effective July 1, 2009, the legislature has changed this law. Any officer who joined before July 1, 2009, will still fall under the benefit offered in 2002, BUT any officer joining (or rejoining) after that date will revert to the original benefit plan. Members will draw the pension upon leaving law enforcement AND reaching the age of 55 OR having service with the Fund of 30 years once they have terminated law enforcement employment.
