Tyrone Oliver, a long-time resident of Newton County, Georgia, was appointed as the Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Corrections on January 1, 2023. His law enforcement career began in 1999 as a Detention Officer with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office. Oliver quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a Deputy Sheriff, then Sergeant, and later Lieutenant. His experience across various divisions equipped him with the versatility needed to effectively serve his community.

Throughout his career in Newton County, Oliver worked in Uniform Patrol, Community Outreach, the East Metro Drug Enforcement Team, Criminal Investigations, the Special Investigations Unit, and the Crime Suppression Unit. He also held the role of Public Information Officer. In 2013, Oliver was among the first to be hired by the newly formed Brookhaven Police Department, where he began as a Sergeant and was later promoted to Lieutenant. During his tenure, he served as the Assistant Commander of Internal Affairs and Criminal Investigations.

On January 8, 2016, after a highly competitive process, Oliver was named Chief of Police for the City of Social Circle. In November 2018, he was further recognized by the City of Social Circle, being designated as Deputy City Manager.

Governor Kemp appointed Oliver as the Commissioner of the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) on July 25, 2019. Under his leadership, the DJJ emphasized restoring youth both inside and outside detention facilities through social programs, education, credible messenger mentorship, and wraparound services. This community-focused approach led to increased educational opportunities, improved job placement for youth across Georgia, a reduction in gang affiliations, and a higher rate of successful reentry.

Commissioner Oliver holds a degree from Columbus State University’s Law Enforcement Professional Management Program. His professional development also includes completion of Leadership programs in Newton and Walton Counties, the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Program, the Leadership Trilogy Program, and participation in the Georgia International Law Enforcement Exchange (GILEE) to Israel. In addition to his professional roles, Oliver serves on the boards of A Child's Voice Child Advocacy Center Inc., Student Success Alliance, Advantage Behavioral Health Systems, and the Leadership Walton Alumni Association.
